Beneficial Bugs Series

student work

A growing interest in learning more about natural history illustration and exploring natural places as I contemplated ideas for my thesis project, led me to work on a number of bug studies. Bugs tend to get such a bad reputation and are often labeled with terms like "creepy" and "crawly." So as a framework for this self-directed project, I decided to feature bugs that bring positive benefits to their environment. These bugs aren't what typically come to mind when one considers "beneficial" bugs.

I particularly enjoyed playing with a brayer to apply the initial layer of acrylic for the backgrounds.
